Cairo to Hurghada at a glance
Cairo is on the Nile and Hurghada is on the Red Sea, with the desert and the Gulf of Suez in between. There is no passenger train to Hurghada, so the choice is between the road (private car or bus) and a domestic flight.

The route, step by step
- Your hotel in Cairo or Giza: pickup at the time you choose. The first part of the drive is through Cairo, so the time this takes depends on the traffic and on where you start.
- Ain Sokhna: the road crosses the desert east of Cairo and reaches the Gulf of Suez at Ain Sokhna.
- Red Sea coast road: from there the road runs south along the coast, past Zafarana and Ras Gharib, with the sea on one side and desert mountains on the other.
- El Gouna: the first of the Hurghada resorts, about half an hour north of Hurghada Airport.
- Your hotel in Hurghada: drop-off at the door, in Hurghada town or further south in Sahl Hasheesh, Makadi Bay or Soma Bay.
How long the drive really takes
The usual time is about 5–5.5 hours for about 460 km. Two things change it most. The first is Cairo traffic at the start: hotels near the Giza Pyramids are on the far side of the city from the road to Ain Sokhna, while Heliopolis and the Cairo Airport area are closer to it. The second is where you are going on the coast: El Gouna comes before Hurghada, and Makadi Bay and Soma Bay are further south, so add the extra time for the last part.
Stops add time too. A coffee break and a lunch break are easy to fit in on a drive of this length; tell us about them in the notes of your request so they are included in the plan.
Stops worth making on the way
The most common stop is a coffee or lunch break along the way. Ain Sokhna, where the road first meets the sea on the Gulf of Suez, is a natural place for a break and a first look at the water.
You can also change the last stop of the trip: the transfer can drop you in El Gouna, Makadi Bay or Soma Bay instead of Hurghada town, so you do not need a second ride once you arrive. If you have time in Cairo before you leave, the Cairo Airport transfer page lists the drive times across the city.
By bus
Public coaches run between Cairo and Hurghada. They are the cheapest way to make the trip, but they leave from bus stations at set times, so you also need to get from your hotel to the station in Cairo and from the station to your hotel on the coast. Departure times, seats and luggage rules depend on the company, so check them before you travel.
The bus suits a solo traveller or a couple with light luggage who are staying near a bus station and do not mind a fixed departure time. It is a harder fit for families, groups and anyone going to a resort outside Hurghada town.
By plane
Domestic flights connect Cairo and Hurghada, and the time in the air is short. Door to door it is longer: the ride across Cairo to the airport, check-in, the flight and then the ride from Hurghada Airport to your hotel. Compare that with the 5–5.5 hour drive for your own dates, and check schedules and fares with the airlines.
If you fly, a private car can meet you at each end. From Hurghada Airport, Hurghada town is 10–20 minutes away, El Gouna and Makadi Bay 25–30 minutes and Soma Bay 35–40 minutes. If you are landing at Cairo Airport from abroad and want to go straight to the coast, you can also skip the flight: request one transfer from Cairo Airport to your hotel in Hurghada.
Which option should you choose?
- Families and travellers with luggage: a private car or SUV, so the bags travel with you and nobody changes vehicle.
- Groups: a minivan takes up to 7 passengers and 7 bags, and the Coaster bus up to 22 and 22, so the whole group travels together.
- Staying in El Gouna, Makadi Bay or Soma Bay: a private car to the hotel door saves a second ride from the bus station or the airport.
- Arriving at Cairo Airport: one transfer from the airport to the coast, without a hotel night in Cairo or a domestic flight.
- Solo travellers on a tight budget: the public bus, if a fixed timetable and station transfers suit you.
Tips for the trip
- Cairo traffic changes a lot through the day, so give us your hotel name and the time you want to leave, and we plan the pickup around it.
- Arriving by air? Send your flight number and landing time with the request so the pickup matches your arrival.
- Say which resort you are going to in the request. El Gouna, Hurghada town, Makadi Bay and Soma Bay are at different points along the coast.
- Going back to Cairo at the end of your holiday? The same transfer runs from Hurghada to Cairo, Giza or Cairo Airport, so you can book both trips together on the Cairo to Hurghada transfer page.
