Cairo Airport to Giza at a glance
Cairo International Airport is in the north-east of the city, close to Heliopolis and Nasr City. The Giza Pyramids are on the west side of the Nile, at the edge of the desert. Many visitors want to stay near the pyramids, but it is the longest of the usual rides from the airport: the road has to get around or through Cairo and cross the river.
The figures below are the usual times by car from the arrivals area to the hotel door. They are the same for a taxi and a private car; what changes them is the traffic and the exact address.
| Distance | Usual drive time | |
|---|---|---|
| Heliopolis and Nasr City | 10–15 km | 15–30 min |
| Downtown and Garden City | about 22 km | 35–60 min |
| Zamalek | about 25 km | 40–60 min |
| Giza Pyramids area hotels | about 45 km | 60–90 min |
Why the drive takes 60–90 minutes
The distance is not the problem; Cairo traffic is. About 45 km on an empty road would be quick, but the city is large and busy, and the route to Giza has to cross it from one side to the other. The same ride can take an hour or an hour and a half, depending on when you land.
Three things make the biggest difference:
- The time of day. Traffic changes a lot through the day. A ride in the busy hours takes longer than one late at night or early in the morning.
- The day of the week. Working days and weekends feel different on Cairo’s roads, so the same landing time can mean a different drive on another day.
- Where exactly the hotel is. “Near the pyramids” covers a wide area. Some hotels are right by the plateau, others are further along the roads around it, and the last part of the drive depends on which one you are in.
The route across the city
From the airport there is more than one way to Giza: around the city on the ring road, or through the centre and across one of the Nile bridges. Which one is faster depends on the traffic at that moment, so the driver chooses on the day. You do not need to plan the route; you only need to give the exact hotel name, so the driver can take the quickest way to it.
If you have a stop to make on the way, for example to buy water or a SIM card, add it to the notes of your request. A stop adds time to the ride, so it helps to have it in the plan from the start.
Taxi or private transfer
Taxis and app-based ride services are available at Cairo Airport. For a long ride like this one, agree the price and the exact drop-off before you set off, and have the hotel’s name and location ready on your phone, as not every driver knows the smaller hotels around the pyramids.
With a private transfer the ride is booked before you travel. You send your flight number, landing time, hotel, passengers and luggage, and we reply on WhatsApp with availability and the price. The car is only for you and your group, with no other passengers, and every vehicle is air-conditioned. Nothing is paid on this website, and the transfer is booked once we confirm it in writing.
Choose the vehicle by group size: a sedan takes up to 3 passengers and 3 bags, an SUV 5 and 5, a minivan 7 and 7, and the Coaster bus 22 and 22. For an hour or more in the car after a long flight, it is worth choosing a vehicle with room to spare for the luggage.
Planning around your landing time
Because the drive time depends so much on traffic, the most useful thing you can send is your flight number and exact landing time. The pickup is then planned around your arrival, not around a guess. If your flight is delayed, message us in the same WhatsApp chat so the pickup can be moved.
Allow time for the airport itself too: passport control and baggage collection come before the drive. If you plan to see the pyramids or the Grand Egyptian Museum on the day you land, keep the plan loose: an evening arrival usually means the visit is easier the next morning.
Going back to the airport
The return ride from Giza to Cairo Airport is the same distance and is affected by the same traffic, so do not leave it too late. Tell us your flight time when you book and we plan the pickup from your hotel with enough time for the drive and check-in. You can book both rides together: choose “Return trip” in the form and add the date and time of the pickup for your departure.
Going on to the Red Sea instead of flying home? The Cairo to Hurghada transfer picks up from hotels in Giza and the pyramids area, and the drive is about 460 km and about 5–5.5 hours.
Which ride should you choose?
- Late-evening or night arrivals: a private car booked with your flight number, so the ride is arranged before you land.
- Families and travellers with a lot of luggage: an SUV or minivan, so everyone and every bag fits in one vehicle for the long ride.
- Groups: a minivan for up to 7, or the Coaster bus for up to 22, so the group arrives together.
- Solo travellers with light luggage: a taxi or app ride works too, as long as the price and drop-off are agreed first.
- Staying in Downtown, Zamalek or Heliopolis first: see the shorter drive times on the Cairo Airport transfer page, and book a separate ride to Giza later in your stay.
Tips for your arrival
- Send your flight number and landing time with the request, so the pickup matches your arrival.
- Give the exact hotel name, not just “Giza” or “the pyramids”: the area is large and the driver takes the quickest route to your hotel.
- Save the hotel’s name and location on your phone before you fly.
- Book the departure ride at the same time and tell us your flight time, so the pickup leaves room for Cairo traffic.
- Need a car for the day while you are in Cairo? Ask for a car with driver for sightseeing or rides between neighbourhoods in the same request.
