The three options at a glance
Hurghada is on the Red Sea coast and Luxor is on the Nile, with the Eastern Desert in between. There is no train between the two cities, so the choice is between the road (private car or bus) and the air.
| Private car | Public bus | Flight | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Time | About 4 hours, door to door | Several hours on the road, plus getting to and from the bus stations | Short time in the air, but airport check-in and, often, a connection through Cairo |
| Pickup and drop-off | Your hotel or Nile cruise boat | Bus stations in each city | Airports in each city |
| Timing | You choose the day and time | Fixed timetable | Fixed flight schedule |
| Luggage | Travels with you in the same vehicle | In the luggage hold | Checked baggage rules apply |
| Stops on the way | Yes, e.g. Dendera Temple | No | No |
| Price | Quoted for your trip on WhatsApp before you book | Check with the bus company | Check with the airline |
By private car: the road from Hurghada to Luxor
The drive is about 280–290 km and takes about 4 hours, depending on traffic and where you are picked up. From Hurghada the road follows the Red Sea coast south to Safaga, then turns inland across the Eastern Desert, with mountain and desert scenery on the way to the Nile Valley. At Qena it reaches the Nile and turns south to Luxor.
With a private transfer the driver picks you up at your hotel in Hurghada, El Gouna, Sahl Hasheesh, Makadi Bay, Soma Bay or Safaga, and drops you at the door of your hotel on the East or West Bank of Luxor, or at your Nile cruise boat. Your luggage stays in the same vehicle the whole way, and you can stop for coffee, lunch or photos when you like.
The same transfer runs in the other direction, from Luxor back to Hurghada, so you can request both trips together. See the Hurghada to Luxor transfer page for the route, the vehicles and how to book.
Stops worth making on the way
Because the road passes Qena, the most popular stop is Dendera Temple near Qena, one of the best-preserved temples in Egypt. A coffee or lunch break and a few photo stops in the desert are easy to add too. Tell us about the stops in the notes of your request so they are included in the quote; stops add time to the drive.
If you would rather see Dendera properly once you are settled in Luxor, the Dendera and Abydos day trip visits both temples in one private day from Luxor.
By bus
Public coaches run between Hurghada and Luxor several times a day. They are the cheapest option and are usually air-conditioned, but they leave from bus stations at set times, so you also need to get from your hotel to the station in Hurghada and from the station to your hotel or boat in Luxor. Seats, departure times and luggage rules depend on the company, so check them before you travel.
The bus makes most sense for a solo traveller or a couple with light luggage who are staying in the centre of Hurghada and do not mind a fixed departure time.
By plane
Flights between Hurghada and Luxor are few, so flying often means changing planes in Cairo. With the trip to the airport, check-in, the connection and the ride into town at the other end, a flight usually takes longer door to door than the 4-hour drive. Check current schedules with the airlines if you want to compare.
Flying can still make sense if you are already flying in or out of Egypt through Cairo and can plan Luxor as part of that journey. If you land at Hurghada Airport and want to go straight to Luxor, the drive from the airport is the same: about 280–290 km and about 4 hours. Request it as one transfer from the Hurghada Airport transfer page instead of two separate rides.
Which option should you choose?
- Families and travellers with luggage: a private car or SUV, so the bags travel with you and nobody changes vehicle.
- Groups: a minivan takes up to 7 passengers and 7 bags, and the Coaster bus up to 22 and 22, so the whole group travels together.
- Nile cruise passengers: a private transfer drops you at the boat. Give the boat’s name as your drop-off, the same way you would a hotel.
- Visiting Dendera on the way: only possible by car, as a stop added to your transfer.
- Solo travellers on a tight budget: the public bus, if a fixed timetable and station transfers suit you.
Tips for the trip
- Leave Hurghada in the morning if you want to arrive in Luxor in time for an afternoon on the East Bank, or after checkout if you are going straight to a Nile cruise.
- West Bank hotels in Luxor are across the river, so allow a little more time for the last part of the drive.
- If you are arriving by air, send your flight number and landing time with the request so the pickup matches your arrival.
- Need to come back to Hurghada? Book the return trip at the same time, from your Luxor hotel or boat.
